Combining adventure, invigorating exercise and mental stimulation, the sport of orienteering offers an all-terrain, off-road alternative to trail walking. Developed by Scandinavians in the late 19th century, orienteering enjoys a huge worldwide following; however, aside from some of the more hardcore disciplines, chilly conditions in northern Europe tend to put a stop to the fun in the wintertime. In contrast, a mild climate ensures optimum orienteering conditions in Cyprus throughout winter and spring.

Put simply, orienteering involves using a map and compass to navigate the fastest way around a cross-country course via hidden checkpoints. It can be a physically demanding activity although participants can follow the routes at their own pace, making the sport suitable for every age and fitness level. It’s a great way to enjoy Cyprus’ natural landscape with orienteering activities offered at some of the island’s most beautiful locations, including the stunning Troodos and Athalassa National Parks, with plans to map new courses around Paphos and Cape Greco to offer greater variety in the future.

In addition to regular league fixtures, the Cyprus Services Orienteering Club organises weekend novice events and the annual Orienteering Championships in April. Visitors are welcome to join in the fun but will need to book in advance.
